Apple's next camera won't record you. It'll write down what you did instead

Code-named J450, the rumored home camera recognizes faces and pets and sends text, not video. That might be worse.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is building a home security camera with one strange spec: it doesn't record video.

Gurman described the device, code-named J450, on the first episode of his Power On podcast. It's a small cylinder that runs at a low frame rate and uses AI to work out what's happening around it. It can tell which person in the household just walked into a room or left, and it knows your pets. All of that reaches you as text. "You're not getting anything but text descriptions," Gurman said. The camera is reportedly meant to pair with J490, Apple's long-rumored smart home hub, and could arrive in 2027. Apple hasn't confirmed any of it.

Footage you scrub, a diary you search

The pitch is easy to imagine: no footage to leak, no clips sitting on a server. It also fits a pattern The Verge flagged this month, where Apple and Google are redrawing what counts as "recording." Features that watch, listen, transcribe and summarize are being sold as not recording at all.

Think about what a text log is, though. "Sam left the house at 11:42 pm" names a person, gives a time, and costs almost nothing to store, search or hand over to someone who asks. A grainy video of a dark hallway is harder to query than a timeline with names in it. Whether this turns out to be the privacy-friendly camera depends on details that haven't been reported consistently, starting with whether all of the processing stays on the device.
