GPT-6 is out, and ChatGPT is done being a text box

OpenAI started rolling GPT-6 out to everyone on October 7, and the model is only half the news. The other half is a feature OpenAI calls Intelligent UI, which lets ChatGPT answer with things you can poke at instead of paragraphs: side-by-side comparisons, diagrams, editable graphs, a calculator, a bill splitter, a small game.

Paid users on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise got it first, running on a model called GPT-6 Sol. Free and Go users got it a day later on GPT-6 Luna. OpenAI says the release is built for the more than 1.2 billion people who use ChatGPT every week, which is a number worth sitting with for a second.

ChatGPT picks the format itself. Ask something simple and you still get text. Ask how to split a dinner bill four ways when one person only had a salad, and you may get a widget. Answers can also start appearing while the model is still thinking or calling tools, and fill in as results arrive.

The chatbot is turning into the app

For two years the running joke about AI products was that they were all the same gray chat window. That's ending. If an assistant can build a working tool on the spot, a lot of single-purpose apps start to look like answers to questions nobody has asked yet.

The update only covers Chat. OpenAI says the models behind its Work and Codex products aren't changing with this release, and enterprise customers will see it depending on their admins' settings.
